Since plant cells differ from animal cells due to the presence of a rigid cell wall, the changes are different when they are immersed in a hypertonic solution. Crenation is the term used to explain the changes occurring in red blood cells when they are immersed in a hypertonic solution. The proteins are then "salted out" of solution and release the salt back to free ions in solution. The cell has an excess of intracellular ions and may swell past its elastic limit due to water influx. A simulation engine is developed based on the model and compared to results in the literature for freeze-thaw injury in human red blood cells.
